TouchScan Ultimate Manual

TouchScan is very easy to use once you know how it works. Unfortunately it is not completely obvious and it can’t be otherwise you wouldn’t be able to fool someone with this tool.
This Manual is divided into several sctions for easy reading and fast finding:

Quickstart

In default mode (Operator-Mode) you are able to set up and use two scan results. Which result is actually shown at the end of the scan is determined by the position of your/the upper thumb.
In order to understand this more easily, lets just have a look at the screen and the areas:

The upper half of the screen (blue) , just above the text, is the “operator-area”. This is where you are supposed to place your thumb. That is to make sure that the scanned person can read the text-outputs easily. The lower half (red), right between the home-button and the text, is the “subject’s area”. Here the person you want to scan is supposed to place his/her thumb.

To select one of the two possible scan-results, the upper half is divided in two section. If you place your thumb in the area marked with the number 1, you will get result 1. If you place your thumb in the area marked with number 2 you get, you guessed it, result 2. If you place your thumb around the middle, its hard to tell in which area you actually are. For this reason there is a tiny indicator placed in the upper left of the screen. If result 1 is selected, there is one green pixel shown. If your thumb is in area number 2 and hence result 2 is selected, two little pixels will be shown.

Now, once you’ve setup the text how you like them, you would typically start to tell a story about how your iPhone can scan i.e. for lies and you ask your victim a question.
Of course this works best when you allready know the right answer, so when the person you are scanning answers, you can tap on the right side of the screen (selecting the
matching result) and start scanning.
If you do it right, your victim won’t notice any trick and yet your iPhone will magically detect whether he or she is telling the truth.

Setting your own texts

In Order to enter your own texts as scan-results you have to quit TouchScan (press the Home-Button) and then open the Settings-Application of your iPhone or iPod.
Once there, scroll down right to the end of the list and find an entry called “TouchScan” and tap on it. This is the place where you can alter all the settings of TouchScan.
Now, to enter your own results you can either Tap on the Buttons labeled “Edit Settings for Result 1″ or “Edit Settings for Result 2″ or – if you feel like it – go and change all results with the Button “Edit Settings for all Results”.
The first two buttons are there as a shortcut for fast changing. Per default, TouchScan operates with these two results only. You can choose which one of these results is shown by the position of your thumb on the screen (see section Quickstart for more info).
Only if you switch to use random results (see section The 2 modes of TouchScan) all ten results will be used.
Results that are left empty or that have not at least one button text defined will be ignored.

What the settings mean

For each result you see a table with sections for “Scanresult” and one for each of the three Buttons (No-, Yes- and Other-Button):

“Title” holds the Text that the requester will show while presenting this result. “Result” holds the text that will be displayed in the body of the shown requester. The fields labeled Yes/No/Other-Button hold the respective button title. If you leave the button title empty, this button will not be shown. You should make sure, however, that at least one button is shown. Otherwise you will have to quit the application once the result is shown.

In the “Answer”-field you can enter a counter-answer that is given once your testant presses this button. For eample, you ask her out for a date, she says “No, thanks.” The Counter-answer could be “Well, was worth a shot!”. If you leave this field empty, no counter-answer will be shown!

Together with the counter-answer you can ask him/her for her telephone number as well. Just switch on this function for the respective button and once the button is presse a requester pops up showing the counter-answer as well as two field to enter name and number. The entered Information will be stored in the built-in Contacts-Application of your iPod/iPhone.

The 2 modes of TouchScan

TouchScan can be operated in two different modes. As a default TouchScan runs in so called “Operator-Mode”. In the settings you can activate the second mode called “Random-Mode”. You can choose which mode is used in the settings found in the Settings-Application of your device.
In order to get there you have to quit TouchScan (press the Home-Button) and then open the Settings-Application of your iPhone or iPod.
Once there, scroll down right to the end of the list and find an entry called “TouchScan” and tap on it. This is the place where you can alter all the settings of TouchScan.

Operator-Mode

In Operator-Mode TouchScan will only use the first two results you enter in the settings (see Setting your own texts). Which one of the results is actually shown is determined by the postion of your thumb. You can find more on this in the Quickstart. Since you have complete control over what result is shown, this mode is especially suitable for use as an icebreaker, for magic tricks or for a lie detector. Since it’s only showing one of two result it is not so much suited for situations where you want a high number of repetitions like for using it as a party game.

Random-Mode

In Random-Mode all 10 results are used. Which one is actually shown is comletely random and can’t be influenced. This is usefull if you don’t need full control over which result is presented. For example if you like using it for some sort of “Truth or Dare”-game or an IQ- or lie-detector this mode will be the right one for you.

Other Settings and Options

About

In the About-Section you can find the current version umber of your copy of TouchScan as well as the web-adress of the Software-Diner (which is www.software-diner.de and you can get e-mail-support at markus@software-diner.de).

Color

In the Color-Section, you guessed it, you can change the color of the scanning interface. That means the thumbnails as well as the scan-bars will be shown in one of ten available colors.

Get News

As a default, TouchScan reads the lastest tweet from the Software-Diner at Twitter and displays it once on the menu-screen. This will make sure you won’t miss any news like special promotions, sales’s or urgent updates from the Diner. Each message will only be displayed once so you won’t be flooded with ads or something. If you don’t like this, just disable the messages by switching the button off.

Persistent Scan

Once the scan started, TouchScan will show an error-message as soon as you lift one of the thumbs being scanned. Some people like this, some don’t. So with this switch you can turn this feature on or of. If persistant scan is “ON” you can remove your thumbs from the screen after the scan started and the animation will continue. If persistant scan is turned of, TouchScan reverts to it’s classic behaviour and demands both thumbs touching the screen for the length of the scan.

Set Default-Texts

If you set this button to on, TouchScan will behave as if it was cleanly installed on your device. It will restore all the factory-settings and -texts upon the next start. So, if you got lost with all the settings and want to have a clean start again, just turn this switch “ON”, leave the settings and start TouchScan.
This will take effect only if you start TouchScan! If you change your mind, you can always go back an deactivate this switch before you start TouchScan and nothing will happen!

Scanning Speed Factor

If you feel the scanning animation is to slow you can speed it up a bit. As a deafault the slider is in the left-most position which means the animation runs with normal speed. In it’s rightmost position the animation is twice as fast. All values in between are valid.

Examples

To give you some idea on how to use TouchScan here are some examples how to set it up for some special purposes.

Love-/Match-Scan

To use TouchScan as an icebreaker at the bar or club or as some kind of love-meter or match-scan, just enter something like

Result 1 Title: WOW! It’s a PERFECT match!
Result 1 Text: You two make a handsome couple! You should have a drink and talk a bit! Will you go with him?
No-Button: No
Yes-Button: Yes
Other-Button: Maybe

Result 2 Title: Strong affinity detected!
Result 2 Text: Further evaluation of the simularities requires extensive talks between you two. What do you think?
No-Button: No
Yes-Button: Yes
Other-Button: Maybe

Now go to a girl/boy and say you have this new iPhone/iPod and it can scan wether you two fit together or not…

Or you might enter a description of the girl in the two results like “Blond, approx. 168 cm, blue eyes” in the one result and something charming in the other result…than scan her twice and see how she reacts that this device knows something about her looks…

Don’t forget to switch on the “Ask for Tel.-Number”-Switch if you want her/his phone-number!

If you happen to approach a group of people you might want to fill all ten results with some general charming answers like the ones mentionend above because once you start, all the others might want to try it as well. With Random-Mode switched on and ten results in place your good to go!

Lie-Detector

If you want to act it as a lie-detector you just make one result say
Title: “TRUE!”
Message:”The suspect is telling the truth!”
and for the Buttons you enter something like
“As if…”
“Told you so”
“ƒh…okay?”

and the other result should say the opposite, like:
Title: “LIE!”
Message:”The suspect is lying!”
with the buttons saying something like:
“I confess”
“Uh..ah..let me explain”
“You get this wrong”

The rest of the settings should be
Random Mode: OFF
Persistent Scan: OFF

So, with these texts entered you can use it as a (fake) lie detector. Now it’s all up to you to make the show! Ask someone a question…maybe you know something, the suspect doesn’t know you know…right? Maybe your friend is on a diet but she secretly ate a whole donut an hour ago and you saw here…so you ask here wether or not she broke the diet-plan. You know wether her answer is right or not. So you choose the appropriate scan-result with the position of your finger and scan her. And “magically” your iPod knows the truth.
That’s all that there’s to it.

Same goes for Fart-Detection by the way…prepare the texts and if someone farts (or you make a fart-noise using iFart or something similar) you can detect who it was. Now everyone will say “Noooo…wasn’t me!” But you know better…you can detect it! In that case you enter instead of “TRUE” or “LIE” just “You farted!” and “You know how to behave”.

This setup can also be used for other similar topics like scanning for
Criminal Records (FBI-Scanner)
Thong/Tatoo/Piercing-Scanner

Alien-Scanner

To use it as an Alien-Scanner you should fill all ten results and switch on Random-Mode. Half to 2/3 of the answers should report something like this:
Title: “Alien Implant detected!”
Message: “Eyeballs enhanced with wireless videocameras!”

The rest of the results could read something like:
Titel: “Clean!”
Message:”No Alien modification detected” or
“You are so boring, not even Aliens want to play with you!”

In this use-case, the Answer-Buttons don’t really make sense, so just enter text for one button (maybe something like “Oooops” or just “OK”). This will make the other two buttons disappear and you can dismiss the result to start scanning again.

The rest of the settings should be
Random Mode: ON
Persistent Scan: OFF

Now, a good time to use this setup would be before or after watching a movie with your friends, especially something like X-Files, Star Trek or a Horror-Movie.

This setup can also be used for other similar topics like scanning for
Zombies, Vampires, Undead
Terminators
Next Top Model
American Idol
